She began with Casa Pequeña, the mustard-yellow house wrapped in wisteria and roses above the village square, the first building Elsa Peretti restored in Sant Martí Vell and the nucleus of what would eventually become her sprawling Catalan world. Peretti moved in before the roof was complete, sleeping through the cold. “It was so cold,” she told Interiors magazine in 2013, “and I could distinctly hear the birds promenading above.” Over the years the house became at once studio, archive, and refuge, its walls layered with the sprawling pinboards she assembled obsessively for decades: groups of sketches, photographs, notes, and clippings that collaborators often described as artworks in their own right. On a nearby shelf, the original wooden prototype for her Bone cuff rested beside works by Marcel Duchamp, while the final Tiffany & Co. catalogue she worked on before her death reportedly remained open on the desk.
